Students at Redding Elementary School are learning about the meaning of Thanksgiving and how to give back to those less fortunate than others.
In Diane DeBonis’s second grade class and Joyce Dufault’s fourth grade class, students made loaves of bread to be delivered to the Dorothy Day Hospitality House in Danbury.
Ms. DeBonis said she has done this for 17 or 18 years.
Students made five different types of bread with help from parent volunteers, Ms. DeBonis, and her student teacher.
After making the batter in class, the parent volunteers are taking it home to bake and then bringing the bread back to class to be wrapped and delivered, she said.
Students made cinnamon swirl, banana, pumpkin, and cranberry orange bread as well as cornbread.
In addition to the large loaves of bread for Dorothy Day, students made smaller loaves of bread to take home, said Ms. DeBonis.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, Ms. DeBonis talked to her second grade students about soup kitchens and how they are places where people less fortunate may go to eat a meal with others.
“I definitely think it helps the kids be thankful for what they have,” she said.
In Mrs. Dufault’s fourth grade class, this was her second year donating bread.
“I thought it was a really nice thing to do — to donate bread,” she said.
Mrs. Dufault’s class made cornbread, cranberry bread, banana chocolate chip bread, and blueberry bread with the help of Mrs. Dufault, her husband, Paul Dufault, special education teacher Donna Egloff, and parent volunteer Cathy Hermantin.
In preparation for Thanksgiving, students had to write in journals what Thanksgiving means to them, said Mrs. Dufault.
“I like having my mom’s friends and my family over. We eat turkey and ham,” said Deanna Owens, fourth grade student. “I’m thankful for my family.”
Catherine Lino said she likes making food and is also thankful for her family.
Andy Zhu said he is thankful for the Pilgrims and Native Americans that started Thanksgiving.
“I love turkey,” he said.
Dylan Boudreau likes going to people’s houses or having people over for Thanksgiving.
“It’s always fun,” he said. “My favorite thing to eat is the Death by Chocolate dessert.”
Mrs. Dufault was taking the bread home to bake and returning with it the next day.
