Eleanor Davis Wolff Stratton, who resided at Meadow Ridge in Redding, Connecticut, died Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut.
Eleanor was born to Esther and Walter Davis in Northampton, Massachusetts on October 5, 1920. Raised on a farm in Hadley, Massachusetts, Eleanor studied nursing in Greenfield and Boston, and served as an Army nurse in Europe during World War II. In 1947 Eleanor married Dr. Hans Wolff, who she met in the Army in 1946 while both were stationed at Deshon General Hospital in Pennsylvania. They lived in New York City, where they raised their two sons, John and Paul. As a devoted couple, Eleanor and Hans were committed to their family, good friends and the dignity of others. Dr. Wolff died from ALS in 1975. In 1976 Eleanor moved to Stamford, CT. In 1980, she built and moved into a home on her father’s former property in Hadley, Massachusetts. Eleanor loved to travel and made her way to Peru, Europe, Israel and much of the United States.
In March 1984 Eleanor married Charles B. Stratton. They lived in Massachusetts, Florida, and Connecticut. Their life together was characterized by a love of the road — RV camping in Shelburne, Massachusetts, Florida and on frequent cross-country trips. Mr. Stratton passed away in 2006 at Meadow Ridge.
Eleanor was a student of American History with a passion for the history and lore of her beloved Massachusetts, and especially the Connecticut Valley and Cape Cod. Her Davis family came from England to the Massachusetts area in 1634. Her ancestors served with distinction in the American Revolution; Captain Isaac Davis led the advance on British Regulars, dying during the Battle of Concord on April 19, 1775. He was the first American officer to die in the Revolution..
Between 2006 and shortly before her death, Eleanor devoted her energy and heart to her family, the Meadow Ridge Lady World War II Veterans, the needs of fellow Meadow Ridge residents, as well as to various historical organizations in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
An adored mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Eleanor is survived, in addition to her sons, by daughters-in-law Rachel and Carol; by grandchildren Aaron Wolff, and his wife Jessica, Rivka Kohn, and her husband Tuvia, Amy and Abigail Wolff; and by great grandchildren Ryan, Meir and Shlomo. Eleanor was also “grandma” to Stratton grandchildren Megan Prentice, Hannah Blossom, Joanna Wyman and Jackson Blossom.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 December 16, 2012 at Meadow Ridge in Redding. A private family service will be held on December 18, at Plainville Cemetery, Hadley, Massachusetts.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hadley Historical Society, Hadley, Massachusetts.
