Not too many contests went the way of the Immaculate-Joel Barlow High wrestling team when it took on New Fairfield last week.
The visitors had to battle for every point they got. Only three matches would go their way in a 58-17 loss on Wednesday, Dec. 19.
Most of New Fairfield’s win were by pins, including four of the first five matches. Tyler Burlinson got one this way in the 145-pound contest by beating Barlow’s Sam Bartlett in three minutes, 57 seconds.
At 152 pounds Andrew D’Amico got the pin in 1:39 over Callum Tennant. The visitors did get a win at 152-pounds with Elias Papadimitriou pinning Connor Yorio in 1:06.
However, the Rebels picked up where they left off when Mike Amorando pinned David Gombos in 2:04 in the 170-pound class. Will Hess also got the pin at 182 by beating C.J. Kowalski in 3:06.
Dante Hristu went the distance against L.J. Quartaro in the 195-pound class but lost a 7-1 decision. Immaculate-Barlow’s second win was at 220 pounds with Steve Ghossanni pinning Shawn Graves in 29 seconds.
Immaculate-Barlow’s last win was in the 285-pound class as Andre Hristu pinned Austin Blum in 4:25.
The visitors had some trouble filling the lighter weight classes as New Fairfield won the 106, 113 and 120-pound matches by forfeit. The closest match was at 126 pounds with Taylor Shea outlasting Emmett LiCastri 4-2 in overtime.
New Faifield’s Dan Amorando pinned Jake Allen in 1:11 at 132 pounds and the match ended with Tyler Cleric outscoring Aidan Buckley 7-1 at 138 pounds.
Heading to Milford on Saturday, Immaculate-Barlow was one of 10 teams at the Lawmen Duals. Finishing fourth out of 10 teams, it defeated Greens Farms Academy 48-28, Windsor 45-29 and Westerly (Rhode Island) but lost 51-16 to Westhill and 49-27 to Jonathan Law to finish 3-2 on the day.
Ghossani had the best individual performance of the day, winning all five of hit matches at 195 pounds. Several other wrestlers also went undefeated.
Papadimitriou went 4-0 at 160 pounds and Dante Hristu did the same at 220, wrestling up a weight class as well.
Andre Hristu also wrestled up a class, competing at 285 and going 4-1. LiCastri posted the same record at 138 pounds while wrestling up a class.
Bartlett went 3-2 in the 145-pound class and Roy Villagomez won his lone match at 220.
Immaculate-Barlow, now 0-2, visits Danbury on Saturday at 9 a.m. and hosts New Milford on Wednesday at 6 at Barlow.
