The Redding-Easton Falcons Middle School Softball team has scheduled tryouts for Saturday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. at the newly constructed Danbury Sports Dome.
The team is designed to support the competitive softball player eager to represent Redding and Easton in the non-sanctioned league throughout southwestern Connecticut and surrounding communities. The Falcons will be competing against established middle school programs and will provide the area’s more experienced players with an opportunity to compete at a high level prior to their rejoining their summer tournament teams.
“Although the league does not keep formal records or crown a so-called champion, they play will be at a very competitive level and we are anticipating fielding a team that will be able to play and be successful against teams they will face when the middle school players go on to represent Joel Barlow High School in the future,” said head coach and team manager Andy Acocella.
The league will run concurrent with the Connecticut high school season, but is not sponsored or supported in any way by Region 9, Helen Keller or John Read Middle Schools, but will be made up of players from the region’s two middle schools.
Players interested in trying out will be run through various hitting and defensive skills, and will receive hands on instruction during the tryout session. Players are expected to arrive at tryouts with their own equipment including turf shoes (cleats not allowed), sports attire, gloves, bats and batting helmets.
Players will be required to pay $20 for the event, which will be applied to the annual fee for those who make the team. The Falcons are now in discussions with sponsors who will play a significant role in supporting the finances of the team in order to reduce parental costs as it will be funded fully by the parents and sponsor(s).
There will be a brief parental meeting at the tryout to provide a full understanding of the player selection process, the philosophy and goals of the program and an explanation of the practice and game schedules.
It is vital that all interested parents email Acocella at [email protected] with the intent to tryout. The Danbury Sports Dome is located at 25 Shelter Rock Lane in Danbury.
