Robert Raine Stirling, son of Robert Henderson Stirling and Erminie Ina Raine Stirling, born April 7, 1933, died January 11, 2013 at his home in Redding, CT. A member of the Dartmouth College Class of 1955, Bob interrupted his studies to join the Marine Corps, where he was a Drill Instructor at Parris Island, SC and served in Korea. Bob returned to Dartmouth and graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BA in Business Administration and went on to receive an MBA Cum Laude from Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth in 1958.
Bob worked for IBM for 30 years, including assignments in Paris and Tokyo. In 1989 he joined Drake Beam Morin, an outplacement services company, as Senior Vice President and Managing Director of the Hartford office. Bob retired in 1996 and joined the Board of Directors of STRIVE Fairfield, County, Inc., a non-profit job training organization.
While working with IBM, Bob traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East and vacationed in India, Kenya, Egypt and Australia. His favorite places were Paris and Hawaii. Bob enjoyed woodworking, fishing, boating, reading, good food and wine. He will always be remembered sitting in his favorite La-Z-Boy chair in front of a roaring fire. He was especially proud of his Scottish heritage. Bob cherished his family and was dearly loved by them all.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Rita Judd Stirling; his children and their spouses: Marjorie and Tim Godfrey (Lebanon, NH), Sharon and Stephen Cadden (Norwalk, CT), Susan and Mike Antonovich (Weston, CT), Scott and Eileen Stirling (Easton, CT), Jeff Stirling (Ipswich, MA); 8 grandchildren: Elizabeth and Jenna Godfrey, Christopher Cadden, Michael and Katie Antonovich, Tyler, Cory and Haley Stirling; his sister Joyce Ann Wyatt; his nephews Martin Wyatt, Doug Wyatt and Harrison Judd; and his grandnephew David Wyatt.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 19th at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of New Canaan, 165 South Ave., New Canaan, CT 06840. The Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Rd. in Fairfield Center has been entrusted with the arrangements.
