Mary N. Hatzis of Danbury, formerly of Bethel and Middlebury, died on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 in Danbury.
A dedicated educator for thirty-five years in the Redding school system, at both John Read Middle School and Redding elementary, Mary was born in Danbury, the daughter of the late Nicholas and Haiditsa (Yiotos) Hatzopoulos. She attended Danbury schools. Mary received a Bachelor degree in Education from CT State College, a Master of Science from CT State College and a Sixth Year Certificate in Education from the University of Bridgeport.
During her thirty-five years of teaching, she spearheaded the Annual Silver Lake program in the Redding school system which promotes children’s interest in the study of nature. Mary’s love for teaching and learning persisted her entire life. She was named a Teacher of the Year during her career in Redding.
Mary was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma honorary society, the National Education Association, the CT Education Association, the Redding Education Association and the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Danbury.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Cathy (Manny) Hatzis, three nephews, Steven Hatzis, Christopher (Vicky) Hatzis, and Dr. Nicholas (Colleen Mulcahy) Hatzis; two nieces, Susan (Eric) Nelson and Michele (Gary) Polvere; five great-nieces and four great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brothers, Michael and Manny, and her sister-in-law, Jean.
The Rite of Burial will take place on Monday, February 25, 2013 at 10:30 AM in the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Clapboard Ridge Rd., Danbury with Father Peter Karloutsos, officiating.
Interment will follow in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
