League of Women Voters hosts debate on Oct. 14

As the fall election season gathers momentum, the Redding League of Women Voters is again offering Redding voters the opportunity to hear from and submit questions to the candidates running for election to municipal offices this November.

On Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7:30 p.m. at the Redding Community Center, candidates for first selectman, selectman and members of the Board of Finance will face off in a league-sponsored debate.

Contenders for the office of first selectman are incumbent Julia Pemberton (D) and challenger Eric Witt (R), while both incumbents Leon Karvelis (D) and Michael Thompson (R) are seeking re-election to the position of selectman.

Three candidates are running for election to two positions on the Board of Finance: Incumbent Ward Mazzucco (R), Peg O’Donnell (D) and James Sanders (R).

The debate will be moderated by Jara Burnett, a league-certified moderator, past president of the state League and a Greenwich resident who shared her expertise with our community at Redding debates in 2013 and 2014.

Written question may be submitted by the audience before and during the debate to a panel of three — one Republican, one Democrat and one unaffiliated voter — who will screen them for legibility, repetition and appropriateness. Questions, which must be directed to all candidates for a given office, will be delivered to the moderator who chooses which questions to pose.

To learn about the issues facing Redding and where the candidates stand, come to the Community Center at 7:30 on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and become an informed voter.

And, above all, remember to exercise the basic right of our American democracy by going to the polls to vote on Nov. 3.

Editor’s note: a previous version of this article incorrectly identified Selectman Michael Thompson as Michael Thomas. The Pilot regrets the error.
