Joel Barlow High School’s 2012 fall musical, “Fiddler on the Roof,” offers a unique collaboration of parents, teachers and students from elementary, middle, and high school. According to Director Diana Canova, the cast forms a winning team.

“They are each and every one a pleasure to work with, and they are all talented,” she said.

The show will run for four performances: Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:00pm; Friday, Nov. 16 at 8:00pm; and Saturday Nov.17 at 2:00pm and again at 8:00pm.

The musical tells the story of Tevye, a Jewish peasant in turn-of-the-century Russia and the father of five daughters who strives to maintain the traditions of his Jewish heritage in the face of changing social values and mounting anti-Semitism in his home country. The tension of this struggle between honoring tradition and adapting to social change is the inspiration for outstanding hit songs that took 1964 Broadway by storm and includes “Tradition,” “To Life,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” and “Sunrise, Sunset.”

The unusually large cast of 50 actors delivers a level of energy and excitement to the stage.

“It’s so great to be able to work with so many talented, funny, and creative people. Practice is one of the high points of my day,” said sophomore John Laske, who plays Avram.

“Our creative team is looking forward to working with all these talented actors,” said Ms. Canova. “Fiddler is one of my favorite shows. It has a beautiful score.”

Canova also said that the historical setting of the story will be enriching for the students.

“It’s my goal that the they not only learn and perform the show but understand and learn the historic value of what the show is about,” she said.

All performances will be held at the Joel Barlow High School’s Auditorium, 100 Black Rock Turnpike. Tickets are $12 ($10 for senior citizens). All tickets will be held at the door and there is no reserved seating. Buy tickets at the door or download the Ticket Order Form at the Joel Barlow web site under Student Activities.
