Health inspections: Eateries are scored for fourth quarter

Four of the town’s eateries will have to be re-inspected following the health department’s inspections for the fourth quarter of 2012.

Three restaurants were tied for the quarter’s high score — Lombardi’s in West Redding, and Mini Vinny’s  and The Olive Market, both in Georgetown, each earned a score of 97. The Olive Garden received the highest score during the third quarter with a score of 100.

The inspections are done by Barry Bogle, a health officer in Darien who works part-time for Redding and does the inspections on weekends.

Every inspection is a snapshot, said town Health Officer Doug Hartline, explaining that every time the inspector goes into a restaurant, its personnel must demonstrate they are meeting the requirements of the public health code.

Quarterly inspection reports are based on a 100-point scoring system devised by the state health department. Restaurants must receive a score of 80 to pass. Violations range from one to four points. The way scoring is done, there is only one subtraction per violation. For example, having food uncovered is a two-point violation regardless of the number of times the violation occurs.

If there are a lot of two-point violations and “definitely” with four-point violations, a re-inspection is in order, said Mr. Hartline.

He cautions that scores “are not necessarily a good indicator for a restaurant’s cleanliness.” A score of 96 could result from a four-point demerit, “which could be cause for potential closure and for a re-inspection,” he said, “and yet a restaurant with a lower score might have been from one-point violations.”

Mr. Bogle inspected early in the quarter, so re-inspection scores are not yet available. Restaurants requiring re-inspection this quarter are New Station House, Luca Wine Bar, Redding Ridge Market, and Redding Roadhouse.

The 2012 fourth-quarter scores are as follows. In parentheses are the third-quarter scores. Re-inspections are denoted with a capital R.
