Redding dancers will perform in ‘The Nutcracker’

These dancers from Redding are among those performing in Wilton Dance Studio’s “The Nutcracker.” Clockwise from top center are Shannon Frierson, Julia North, Penny Murphy, Elyse Cowles and Naya Palacio.

Wilton Dance Studio’s 2012 production of The Nutcracker features more than 110 students and adults from seven area towns including 20 from Redding. The ballet will be performed on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 1 and 4:30 p.m. at Wilton High School’s Clune Center for the Performing Arts.

Wilton Dance Studio’s The Nutcracker is now in its 14th year. Any long-running production needs an update now and then, and this year’s performance is filled with them. An antique sleigh will be incorporated into the production, and a vintage canopy bed upon which the Nutcracker makes his battle scene entrance will enhance the setting. New period costumes for the opening party scene have been added, and the Snow Queen and Dew Drop fairies will be dressed in sparkly new tutus. The Nutcracker himself will be donning a brand new head that will make its debut in this year’s performance.

Brenda Froehlich, Wilton native, owner and artistic director of the studio, said, “Every year we do our best to keep the performance fresh for the audience and for the dancers. Some of our dancers have been with us for more than 10 years and we’re committed to making The Nutcracker magical for them every year.”

This year, Redding student Shannon Frierson will play the Sugar Plum Fairy. Also joining this production of The Nutcracker is world-renowned guest principal dancer Abraham Miha. The 2012 Nutcracker production marks his second appearance with Wilton Dance Studio as the Sugar Plum Cavalier.

Wilton Dance Studio’s Artistic Director Brenda Froehlich creates the costumes and overall production concepts. Scenery is provided by Mark Froehlich of J.Galt Design, a nationally recognized theatrical backdrop company. Choreography is by Mrs. Froehlich and Wilton Dance Studio Instructor and Choreographer Debra MacDonald. A host community and parent volunteers contribute to the final performance as well.

Wilton Dance Studio continues its tradition of inviting the community to enjoy the ballet.
