Administrators request more technology in 2013-14 budget

Redding Elementary School and John Read Middle School administrators provided the Redding Board of Education with a technology update during the budget workshop on Thursday, Jan. 10.

At Redding Elementary School there are currently 105 iPads, 217 desktop computers, 21 MacBook Pro laptops, and 12 non-Mac laptops.

At John Read Middle School there are 57 iPads, 24 Macbook Pro laptops, 60 non-Mac laptops and 191 desktop computers.

The iPads and MacBook Pro laptops are part of a pilot program.

The request for the 2013-14 budget from the elementary school is one mobile cart with either iPads or laptops and 10 Chromebooks. Chromebooks are laptops that run on the Google Chrome operating system.

John Read Middle School has requested two mobile carts and three laptops.

Sixty laptops are proposed to be replaced at the elementary school and 50 laptops at the middle school. John Read is also requesting 40 desktop computers to be replaced.

Peggy Sullivan, director of finance and operations for Easton, Redding and Region 9 school districts, said there would be a reduction in cost because the newer equipment is less expensive.

She also said that all computers and iPads are leased so when equipment needs to be replaced or repaired, the lease is up as well.

Diane Martin, John Read Middle School principal, said the demand for iPads is “overwhelming.”

By adding two mobile carts the ratio would drop from one cart per eight teachers to one cart per four teachers.

Ms. Sullivan said by late spring administrators will know which works better for their needs, MacBooks or iPads.

“We might use a mix of the iPad or MacBooks but a cart is needed,” said Ms. Martin.

Ms. Wessman Huber said the demand for the use of the 105 iPads at the elementary school is high so they implemented a system to assign iPads to different teachers.

Mike D’Agostino, board member, said it is a good idea to track the use.
