Wrestling: Falcons nail Panthers

Despite a slow start the Immaculate-Joel Barlow High wrestling team had plenty left for later in its match at Pomperaug.

The visitors lost the first four weight groups last Wednesday, Jan. 9. The tide then turned in their favor before the match became a battle again with the outcome  undecided until the last match was finished with Immaculate-Barlow winning 40-34.

Pomperaug started strong, winning the first four weight groups. Quinn Gadski outscored Jake Allen 15-4 in the 138-pound match. Mike Ushka pinned Callum Tennant at 145 pounds and Nick Civitello did likewise to Sam Bartlett at 152.

The streak ended with Mike Calo winning a 6-1 decision over Elias Papadimitriou at 160 pounds.

As the heavier weight groups got underway Immaculate-Barlow fared better. Its first win came in the 170-pound contest as C.J. Kowalski pinned Grant Ward.

The visitors got back-to-back forfeits with John Stocks winning the 182-pound class and Dante Hristu taking 195. Steve Ghossani then pinned John Bedosky at 220. It was a close match at 285 pound before Pomperaug’s Brandon Hogetsyn held off Andre Hristu 8-5.

Immaculate-Barlow responded with Jay Broderick getting the forfeit at 106 pounds. It returned the favor in the 113 and 120-pound classes when Pomperaug won by forfeit.

The match was still up for grabs going into the last two contests. Emmett LiCastri put Immaculate-Barlow back in the lead with an 11-1 win over Justin Griffin in the 126-pound class and the win was sealed with Aidan Buckley pinning Chase at 132 pounds.

It was a busy day for Immaculate-Barlow when it competed in the East Haven Duals on Saturday. Beating New Haven 42-27 and Brookfield 60-18, it lost to the hosts 47-18 and 54-20 to Foran.

Several wrestlers went home within winning records. LiCastri went unbeaten at 126 pounds at 4-0, as did Buckley at 132 and Ghossani at 195. Andre Hristu won three matches at 220 pounds.

Bartlett (145) and Ed MacLean (152) went 2-2 and Dante Hristu had a 2-1 record at 182 pounds.

Immaculate-Barlow goes to the Somers Duals on Saturday and hosts Oxford on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Barlow.
