Indoor track: Several qualify for post-season

The Joel Barlow High boys indoor track team’s second trip of the season to the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City yielded strong performances across the board.

Competing in the Molloy Stanner Games on Saturday, Jan. 12, the Falcons faced athletes from across the tri-state area. Several members of the team ran well, recording times that qualified them to compete in the conference and state championship meets during the post-season.

Headlining Barlow’s contingent of athletes was senior Logan Fulton, who competed in a special invitation mile run. In the field of seven runners, who mostly hailed from New York, Fulton finished fifth, crossing the line in four minutes, 33.06 seconds, out-kicking sixth-place finisher Patrick McGuire of Smithtown West by a narrow margin of 0.34 second.

The stiff out-of-state competition also elicited a good showing from senior Colin Rooney. Barlow’s middle-distance specialist established a new personal best in the 600-meter dash. Rooney raced to a time of 1:29.21, which ranked him 34th in the field of 145. Rooney has already qualified to compete in both the conference and state meets.

In the 1,000-meter run, senior Colby Johnson was Barlow’s top finisher in 2:53.69 for 79th out of 175 who contested the event. With this run, Johnson qualified to compete in the South-West Conference championship meet . Additionally, junior captain Henry Pronovost crossed the line in 2:58.20, qualifying for the SWC meet himself as well.

Senior Alex Dolcimascolo solidified his status as Barlow’s swiftest sprinter. Dolcimascolo competed in the 300-meter dash, finishing the two-and-a-half-lap race in 39.75 seconds. This time is well under the SWC qualifying standard, and a mere 0.01 second over the qualifying mark for the state Class M championship. Dolcimascolo will likely qualify for the latter meet in the upcoming weeks.

The Falcons return to competition on Monday, Jan. 21, at an SWC developmental meet at Wesleyan University.
