On issues of gun violence: Carter hears testimony at hearing

Dan Carter

State Rep. Dan Carter (R-2), a member of the legislature’s Gun Violence Prevention Working Group, listened to hours of testimony as 2,000 residents visited the Capitol to make their voices heard on the controversial issue of gun violence on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

The public hearing, which began with an informational forum at 10 a.m., lasted into the next morning as the 16-member panel of bipartisan legislators heard cries both for and against stricter gun control.

“The testimony convinced me everyone is concerned about gun violence, but those with opposing ideas find it difficult to relate to the opposite point of view,” said Mr. Carter, who represents the southwestern portion of Newtown in addition to parts of Redding, Bethel and Danbury. “I am confident we can find some meaningful common ground on these sensitive and important issues while respecting the rights of citizens,” he said in the release.

“I’m concerned we may be moving forward with this process without having complete information on the unspeakable massacre that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary” said Mr. Carter in his release. “It is my hope that this task force has the opportunity to hear some of the facts so we can make informed decisions on legislation. This process must appropriately honor and respect the people of Newtown as we seek to improve the safety and security of Connecticut residents.”

The nearly 17 hours of testimony included remarks from family members of Sandy Hook shooting victims, leaders of gun sport leagues, law enforcement and public officials.

Mr. Carter was appointed to the Gun Violence Prevention Working Group of the Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention and Children’s Safety by legislative leadership. The group has been charged with conducting a review of current law and making recommendations on legislation to thwart gun violence.
