Cottrell is state champ

Christiana Cottrell of Redding, Elks’ Hoop Shoot state champion, receives a trophy from State Elks President Terry Ford, with State Hoop Shoot Chairman John Podbielski in the background.

Shooting in the girls’ 13 year-old division of the Elks’ National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest, Christiana Cottrell emerged victorious in the State of Connecticut finals held in Wallingford on Sunday, Feb. 17.

Cottrell, a Redding resident, bested her counterparts from the other regions of the state to earn a trip to the New England finals to be held in Portland, Maine in March. She needed to sink seven of her last eight free throws to be successful and win the state title.

As Connecticut state champion, Cottrell now advances to the Maine shoot-off where she will compete against the other five New England state winners in her division for entry into the national championships in Springfield, Mass. in April.

Cottrell, in addition to the state top prize, also received a special trophy for having the best overall score in the girls’ division of the entire contest.
