The public is invited to Jazz Vespers, a non-traditional service at Christ Church Parish Episcopal on Sunday, May 5, at 7 p.m.

The theme for Jazz Vespers is ”Reality Is the Mystery.” Renowned flutist Ali Ryerson will join bassist-vocalist Paul Avgerinos, pianist Martha Meyer, and drummer Chris Pike in a program of improvisation on tunes by Dave Brubeck, Hudson/DeLange,Rodgers/Hammerstein, Steve Swallow and Harling/Whiting.

The music will be introduced by brief readings that include thoughts from Teilard De Chardin, Carl Sagan, Albert Einstein, a humorous poem by Mary Oliver and the Rev. Marilyn Anderson on the subject of “Falling Grace.”

Ali Ryerson has played flute worldwide with a range of artists that includes Kenny Barron, Billy Taylor, Stephane Grapelli, Art Farmer, Maxine Sullivan and Roy Haynes, among others. As principal flutist with the Monterey Bay Symphony, she performed with Luciano Pavarotti. Numerous albums have been released under her own name as well as duo recordings with guitarist Joe Beck. She is the owner of her ideal instrument — the signature Ali Ryerson flute, designed for her by the Brio division of the famous flute company Gemeinhardt.

Paul Avgerinos, whose Redding Studio Unicorn has produced Grammy-nominated recordings for Round Sky Music, is a graduate of Peabody Conservatory.

Chris Pike, percussion, is the owner of Ridgefield Music.

Martha Meyer, music minister, has played for area restaurants and country clubs, the Mayflower Inn in Washington, Conn. and IBM in Palisades, N.Y.
