State DOT will start work on a bridge on Route 53 beginning April 1. The project is expected to be completed by Sept. 8.

The state Department of Transportation will begin bridge work on Route 53, just north of John Read Middle School, beginning April 1.

Lane closure and delays are to be expected Monday through Friday from 9 to 3 with alternating one way traffic controlled by flaggers or temporary traffic signals.

The project is expected to be completed by Sept. 8, 2015.

The bridge rehabilitation consists of replacing the concrete bridge deck and associated parapets, installing a new metal beam rail and pavement along with other minor safety improvements.

DOT officials informed residents of the project last winter during a special meeting.

The project was awarded to Dayton Construction Co., Inc. at the cost of $425,295.

This bridge project is the first of two scheduled to take place on Route 53.

In 2016, DOT will be repairing the bridge at the intersection of Route 53 and Umpawaug Road.
