Boys soccer: Hand deals Barlow season-ending loss

It was too little too late for the Joel Barlow High boys soccer team in the quarterfinals of the state Class L tournament last week.

The second-ranked Falcons found themselves down early to seventh-ranked Daniel Hand of Madison at home last Wednesday, Nov. 14. By the time they began to play their usual game the damage was done and they found themselves on the short end of a 3-0 upset to end the season.

Such also marked the team’s only loss of the season.

The scoring started just nine minutes and 30 seconds into the game when Tyler Kilkenny scored from midfield on a free kick which was the only score of the first half.

Hand found the goal again just 40 seconds into the second half when Christian Koshgarian scored on an assist by Brian Jackson.

“We fought hard but we weren’t sharp,” said Barlow head coach Paul Winstanley. “We were down 2-0 before we decided to be a possession team again and that was our problem.”

The third and final goal came with 16:44 left in the match when Ian Richardson scored on a Gavin Reeves assist.

“They were an excellent team coming in,” said Winstanley. “They decided they wanted to run more than we did. They were consistent with pressure on the ball and moving in groups, and we could not answer it. It was their day, four shots and they scored three goals.”

Despite the loss, the Falcons accomplished much this season, including another South-West Conference championship.

“This is the best season I’ve ever had here, the most fun I’ve ever had with a group of young men in terms of the training and the camaraderie and the level of play were able to play at,” said Winstanley. “I don’t want to take anything away from the boys. I am not disappointed in my team. Most people aren’t defined not how they fall but how they get up afterwards. It was a fantastic season.”

Barlow finishes the season at 16-1-3.
