Camerata will perform Christmas concert

Camerata d’Amici will present a Christmas concert on Dec. 9 in South Salem, N.Y. Area Comerata members include Maura Donnelly O’Halloran of Wilton, and Mia Herstatt, Kristin Sponheim, the group’s director, and Robin Sozzi, all of Redding.

The choral group Camerata d’Amici will present “A Celebration of Christmas” on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m. at the South Salem Presbyterian Church, 111 Spring St., South Salem, N.Y.

Dr. Kristin Sponheim of Redding will conduct the ensemble of singers from Fairfield and Westchester counties in a performance of works from Renaissance to modern, and from many countries and cultures. The concert also includes traditional carols with the audience invited to sing along.

The central theme of the first half of the concert is mystery. From the reflective lullaby “Taladh Chriosda” (sung in Scottish Gaelic) to the haunting Appalachian folk song “I Wonder As I Wander.” The first half of the program is framed by two joyful selections, “Gaudete,” a medieval carol with percussion accompaniment, and the Nigerian carol, “Betelehemu,” sung in Yoruba.

The second half of the concert features a number of carols from Christmas traditions around the world. These carols portray musical tableaus of the Nativity. The program will close with “This Christmastide” by Donald Fraser.

Tickets at the door are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $10 for children 12 and under. Advance tickets, with a reduced ticket price for adults of $20, may be purchased by sending a check to Camerata d’Amici at P.O. Box 74, Ridgefield, CT 06877.
