Wrestling: Higher weight groups give Newtown a tussle

A strong performance in the heavier weight divisions came a bit too late for the Immaculate-Joel Barlow High wrestling team when it visited Newtown.

The team finished by taking three of the last four contests. Such narrowed the gap considerable but Newtown still remained out of reach, winning 43-28 last Thursday, Dec. 27.

The Nighthawks opened with a win, taking the 106-pound class when Luca Crudo pinned Jay Broderick in 57 seconds. Neither side had a wrestler at 112 pounds, resulting in a double forfeit, and Immaculate-Barlow was without one for the 120-pound match as well.

Its first win was at 126 pound when Emmett LiCastri pinned Matt Gonzalez in 3:05. Jake Allen followed by pinning Chris LaJoie in 3:17 to win the 132-pound match.

Newtown, however, pulled ahead to stay by posting five straight wins, including one in the 128-pound class. James Leuci won by a 7-1 decision over Aidan Buckley.

Jacon LoCorotondo got the pin against Immaculate-Barlow’s Callum Tennant in 1:28 at 145 pounds. Newtown’s Chase Hutchinson followed by pinning Sam Bartlett in 3:25 in the 152-pound match.

The 160-pound class featured Ed LaJoie winning a 16-7 decision over Elias Papadimitriou. It was a quick match at 170 pound with Newtown’s Forest Speed pinning David Gombos in 11 seconds.

Immaculate-Barlow put up a fight in the next three classes, winning each. Dante Hristu pinned Max Temple in 5:44 at 182-pounds.

Getting a shutout at 195 pounds, Steve Ghossani won a 12-0 major decision against Patrick Carello. The visitors’ last victory was at 220 pounds when Andre Hristu pinned Trey Dewald just as time expired in 6:00.

The Nighthawks got the last word in as well as the victory by forfeit at 285-pounds.

Immaculate-Barlow takes part in the Bunnell Duals on Saturday at 9 a.m. and is at Pomperaug on Wednesday at 6.
