Gymnastics: Falcons top 100-point mark in win

A slight increase in its scores meant good results for the Joel Barlow High gymnastics team in its meet at Pomperaug last week.

The Falcons tacked on more than five points from their previous meet when they traveled to Southbury on Tuesday, Jan. 15. Scoring a 102.4, they defeated the hosts (98.6) but fell yo Nonnewaug (132.4).

Once again the vault was the best event for the Falcons, who had three gymnasts surpass the eight-point mark and had one near-miss. Julianne Debellis led the way with an 8.4, which was also fourth overall among individual scores for the meet in the event.

Allison Cusick also topped the eight-point mark with an 8.2. Kylie Rizzo was just a tenth of a point behind her with an 8.1. Just missing eight points, Krista Ganim scored a 7.9.

Barlow had just three compete on the uneven bars but with each totaling more than 7.5. Debellis again led Barlow, this time with exactly eight points. Both Rizzo and Cusick earned a a 7.8.

The balance beam featured Alex Jones and Rizzo each scoring a 7.9, placing them second overall only to Nonnewaug’s Grace Cvancigar. Lucy Whitehouse scored a 7.5 and Ganim finished with seven on the nose.

An 8.5 by Debellis on the floor was good for third overall. Rizzo was the other competitor in the even for the Falcons and had a 7.4.

The Falcons take on Darien on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Darien YMCA.
