Officials to share their views on guns at Feb. 4 meeting

Dr. Saul Cornell

Dr. Saul Cornell, a Redding resident and one of the nation’s leading scholars on the history of the Second Amendment and gun regulations, will moderate an informational forum, “Making Our Communities Safer,” with area representatives and Redding’s chief of police at the Redding Community Center on Monday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m.

Margi Esten, an organizer for the event, said after the overwhelming response to the first meeting with Dr. Cornell on Jan. 14, when he spoke about gun regulations, she and other organizers pulled together to coordinate a forum with state representatives and other public officials.

“Many people were asking good questions and asking questions of the state representatives. Three of them were in the audience but didn’t answer questions [that night], so we thought we should have another with them,” said Ms. Esten.

The event will provide an opportunity for representatives and law enforcement to share with the community their thoughts on what needs to be done to make communities and schools safer.

In attendance will be state Sen. Toni Boucher (R-26th District), state Reps. Dan Carter (R-2nd District) and John Shaban (R-135th District), Redding police Chief Douglas Fuchs, and representatives from the offices of U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), and Congressman Jim Himes (R-4th District).

This forum is free and open to the public with time for a question-and-answer session.

Organizers of the event are Redding residents Margi Esten, Posie Morgan, Lestina Trainor, Heather Whaley, Alice Smith, and Mary Ann Carman.
